May18 044We are thrilled when guests explore our inns, eateries, and other visitor-related businesses, many of which strive for sustainability. Recently, unWINEd earned its distinction in the NC GreenTravel program, with a three-dogwood blossom rating, the highest obtainable. North Carolina’s green travel recognition program is the most extensive in the nation, encompassing lodging, food service, attractions, museums, parks, vacation rentals, convention centers, festivals and other travel-oriented businesses.

The actions encouraged by NC GreenTravel help businesses and government:

  • Reduce operation costs
  • Increase profits and extend their brand

NC_GreenTravelThe NC GreenTravel Initiative is a free program to help promote robust economic growth and environmental stewardship in the travel and hospitality sector through the recognition of “green” travel-oriented businesses. Over 100 businesses in North Carolina are recognized by the state’s NC GreenTravel Initiative. Many of those businesses are seeing an increase in business as a result. All are seeing savings in operating expenses due to energy, water and solid waste disposal savings.

Tom Rhodes, director, administrator, and champion of NC Green Travel shares his insight with us about green travel, “Sustainable tourism has become an important facet of North Carolina’s travel scenario. More than ever, travelers are seeking to spend their travel dollars with green hotels, restaurants, attractions and other sustainable travel businesses. Consumers equate greening with cleanliness and better business practices.” Sharing the statistics, Tom continues,”One study showed that 90% of hotel guests prefer staying in hotels that care about the environment. 75% of hotel guests will partake in environmentally conscious initiatives such as sheet and towel options and green amenities. 65% oMay18 051f people think that effective green management boosts a hotel’s appearance and competitive edge.”

Joni and Ray Pavlik are proud owners of unWINEd. Joni tells us, “It was such an honor to be recognized by NC Green Travel for our efforts to be sustainable and green.
