Sweet Start and Sweet Finish

Every vacation deserves a sweet finish. It’s always off to a great start—we’re happy and carefree, even if we are checking email every so often. When Sweet Oven Bakery opened in downtown Pittsboro, it thrilled us like little kids at Pittsboro Toys.

Toni Massa worked for almost three decades in the corporate world as an executive (Tax and Treasury) but it seemed like the culinary thread always pulled her. She worked in food service in one way or another since high school and she always had in mind the possibility of catering or opening a place that was coffee/bakery related. Dedicated to fitness, she always carries a great balance (okay, maybe a little more on the treat side) of items, including yogurt, bananas (always available), granola, multigrain bread, maple oatmeal scones, and more.

Toni’s influence comes from a variety of places, including a combination of old family recipes. While she always had the thought of opening a bakery in her mind, she took it seriously and earned certificates from the San Francisco Baking Institute, a baking and pastry arts school. Experimenting with recipes and learning about pastry and bread baking in a commercial operation was important and the sweet results of  her education taste spectacular!

The diversity and excitement of something new each time is part of the fun. We recommend the rustic tarts and savory scones make a great snack to take along on a hike. If you’re visiting us and hosting or attending a meeting or workshop, get the morning started right with a selection of goodies from Sweet Oven Bakery. Or, if you’re hosting a special occasion at one of our bed & breakfast inns, consider a cake round (6”, 8”, 9” rounds). When they’re closed or if you’ve missed your chance, satisfy your brownie fix at The City Tap, which is now serving these brownies with an optional berry or caramel topping (made at The City Tap and available for an additional charge).

Caribou coffee is brewed here and smells great in conjunction with the warm baked goods! They use Lindley Mills flours and locally sourced eggs at Sweet Oven Bakery and the anticipation of finding a new, favorite, or different item is as sweet as the treat itself.

Below is a sampling of goodies that have been available, sweet and savory, and if you follow them on Facebook, you’ll have information about the latest flavors, selections, and creations.
